This season, we had the privilege of following our dear friend and incredible photographer, Birgit Sfat, on her journey to Lanzarote—the “island of fire.” Birgit, with her keen eye for the dramatic and the beautiful, captured the essence of this rugged landscape in a series of images that are awe-inspiring. Her photos, with their deep shadows and moody tones, perfectly reflect the island’s spirit—dark, raw, and profoundly unique. The occasional whitewashed coastal village and deep blue seas offer a soft contrast to the rugged backdrop.

Through Birgit’s lens, Lanzarote’s unique soul came to life in ways we never could have imagined. From the volcanic landscape to the architectural heritage designed by César Manrique in the 60s-70s, Lanzarote is an unforgettable destination worth adding to your travel bucket list.

What truly makes Lanzarote special, is the legacy of César Manrique, the visionary artist and architect who was born here and later returned to leave his mark on the island. After studying in Madrid, Manrique spent time in New York City in the 60s, befriending Warhol and other artists. Upon his return to Lanzarote in the 70s, Manrique found a way to merge his passion for art with his love for the island’s environment.

He created several iconic projects that blend architecture with nature, such as the Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, and the César Manrique Foundation. Manrique’s influence helped shape Lanzarote’s identity as a place where art and nature coexist harmoniously and his legacy continues to define the island as a cultural and artistic destination.

Lanzarote’s terrain is an arid desert-like landscape punctuated by towering cacti, sparse palms, and stark, black, volcanic sand.
