Prop stylist and interior designer Olivia Sammons has been a woman we've respected and admired for years. A creative force whose inspirations transcend trend, her perspective on how to tell stories through space and imagery are as grounded as she is. Her outlook is a reminder to trust your intuition, seek simplicity, and respect the boundaries of self. Here, a snapshot of a late autumn day in the life during a visit to Olivia's Upstate NY home.

What might someone new to your work be curious to learn of how your background has contributed to the woman you are today?
My background has made me the woman who I am today. My personality has developed as a reaction and a response to the challenges and beauty that have been a part of my life. I was introduced at an early age to the importance of creative expression, the pleasure of food, community and beauty, and the invaluable imprint of abundant affection and love.

What themes or questions have been most emergent for you of late? Perhaps it’s a metaphor or quote…
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” James Baldwin

What brings you alive? When do you feel the most awake to this feeling?
There are so many things that make me feel alive; my work, my children, my husband, friends, cooking, moving my body, nature, art.

What informs and inspires your work more generally?
Beauty, integrity, and possibility.

When are you living most closely, or more true, to yourself?
I am living most comfortably within myself when I am mindful of my boundaries, reduce negative mental chatter and carve out adequate time for self care. I have also become more comfortable with the parts of myself that are true but harder to love.

How does your work offer you space to explore or work through, that other creative mediums/environments might not?
Working as an interior designer has been much more fulfilling than I anticipated. A huge part of my job is to listen and help distill the essence of what a client is searching for. It is fascinating to explore the psychology of a space and the impact that thoughtful choices can have on the lives of those who occupy it.

What has been a non-obvious turning point for you, either personally or professionally?
I am not sure if anything jumps out as a non-obvious turning point, hindsight is always 20/20. Designing interiors is not something that I thought I would do for a living but of course now it seems like an obvious continuation of prop styling.

What’s next for you?
I hope that the next for me is a natural continuation of the now. This phase of my life is incredibly full, demanding and beautiful. I feel closer to better understanding myself and the ways in which I can creatively contribute to improving the lives of those around me.
